Lockport, NY - Steve Clark, vp of Clark Rigging and Sculptor Susan Geissler signal the crane moving a lifesize bronze statue of 1897 portrait photographer Frank B. Clench at the Lockport Locks on the Erie Canal. The sculptures, based on an iconic photo taken in 1897 of 12 Lock Tenders and a little girl seated in the Lockport Locks, will be installed on the same stairway on which they were photographed 124 years ago. The Phase II project includes a sculpture of the photographer, F.B. Clench, in addition to the likenesses of another four of the Lock Tenders.
Lead sponsor of the Lock Tenders Tribute Monument is the County of Niagara, which has allocated Niagara River Greenway funding for all three phases of the project. In addition, the New York State Canal Corporation invested $125,000 in 2018 Consolidated Funding through Governor Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development Councils and the NYS Department of State allocated $275,000 in Downtown Revitalization Initiative funding for the five figures in Phase II. Formal dedication of the Lock Tender figures is planned as part of Lockport’s Lock Tenders Tribute Event on Saturday, July 3 at 10 AM in the Lockport Locks.

Lockport Lock Tender Sculptures to be Installed June 25 in Lockport Locks
Five life-size, cast bronze sculptures of 19th Century Lockport Lock Tenders will be installed in the Lockport Locks on Friday, June 25. The five new figures will join the original three sculptures installed in July, 2020 and are part of the 14-figure Lock Tenders Tribute Monument.
The sculptures, based on an iconic photo taken in 1897 of 12 Lock Tenders and a little girl seated in the Lockport Locks, will be installed on the same stairway on which they were photographed 124 years ago. The Phase II project includes a sculpture of the photographer, F.B. Clench, in addition to the likenesses of another four of the Lock Tenders.
Designed and fabricated by Youngstown, NY artist Susan Geissler, the Lock Tenders Tribute Monument will consist of the twelve Lock Tenders, the little girl and the photographer. The monument is a project of the Lockport Locks Heritage District Corporation, the non-profit organization which operates the Erie Canal Flight of Five Locks and the Flight of Five Lock Tenders Tour.

Phase III of the Lock Tenders Tribute, which will provide for the installation of another six figures, is currently under design.
Although public access to the Lockport Locks will be restricted during the installation of the sculptures, which is expected to begin around 9 AM, the public may view the installation process from either the Pine Street Bridge or from Canal Street.
